TATTOO AFTERCARE

New tattoo? Hooorey 🥳

Now it’s time for you to take good care of it. For 2-3 weeks you must take some special steps and precautions for your tattoo to heal beautifully and your skin to remain healthy and happy.

What to do within the first 3 hours after the tattoo session?

So you just left the studio and you’re all wrapped up. Good!

Go eat something to regain your energy, drink water and go to a shop to make sure you have all you need. That is:

  • cling film (plastic wrap you use on food. You can find it in an ordinary supermarket)

  • paper towels (extra soft)

  • gentle, perfume and alcohol free soap

  • bepanthen cream (you can use the classic bepanthen with a blue stripe or bepanthen tattoo)

  • Tape for skin

Now as you made sure you had all the things needed, let’s take care of your tattoo. Please do this starting from 2-3 hours after leaving the tattoo atelier.

1.

Wash your hands with soap.

Wash your tattoo with the gentle perfume-free soap you just got.

2.

Dry your (now) clean tattoo using paper towels. Tap it gently and avoid rubbing as that would hurt and irritate your skin.

3.

With clean, dry hands cover the tattoo area with a thin layer of cream (bepanthen). Avoid using an excessive amount as your skin needs to breathe.

(For the first 3 days and nights only!:)

4.

After applying the cream use a plastic wrap to protect your tattoo from dust and bacteria. It will also keep the cream in place, as well as protect the outside from getting dirty from your tattoo (ex. sheets during sleep)

If you are staying home (within the initial 3 days and can afford to rest f. ex. on the couch and watch a movie in a way that nothing and no one is touching your tattoo, then let it be uncovered. It will help it breathe.

Those steps (1, 2, 3 & 4*) need to be repeated 3 times a day for 7 days. After that I advice you to cream the tattoo area once a day after shower for another week to keep the skin moisturised and flexible.

*4 for the first 3 days and nights only

Here is some extra information you might need to read:

  • your tattoo will push out ink and liquids. You will certainly see ink on your paper towel as you dry your skin. Don’t worry when you see this. It’s completely normal. Your tattoo will stay (the ink comes from the first layer of skin only)

  • about 2-4 days after the session the tattooed area will peel off (just as if you had a sun burn). It might itch, but don’t scratch it, neither should you pick on it. Let it be and if it’s really itchy slap it gently to ease the feeling. This is also the time when the tattoo is not looking the best. It’s normal and this phase will soon pass.

  • Shower normally. If possible try to avoid your normal products (ex.body wash, shampoo, conditioner, perfumed body lotion) touching your tattoo, but you don’t have to be orthodox about it.

  • Avoid excessive work-out, sauna, long baths, swimming pool and ocean for the first 3 weeks.

  • Avoid sunshine for the first 3 weeks (if you’re going to be exposed to excessive sunlight you can cover your tattoo with clothing or a bandana. Use a high SPF daily (after the first 2 weeks)

  • If at any point you experience health issues you must contact your doctor, not your tattoo artist. (Off course you can send me a message regarding your tattoo and your basic health condition but I am not a doctor)

  • Send me a picture of your tattoo after it’s healed! Preferably in day light but not with the sunlight falling on the tattoo skin directly. If you can have a plain background would be fantastic 👌

Lastly, but not least:

  • If you liked your experience with me, write me a review on Facebook or in a private message so I know if I’m doing good or if there is something I can improve.

  • Tell a friend. Share your experience and pass my contact to someone. I will not forget that it was from your recommendation and I will make sure I take a very good care of your friend. Maybe you can join to hold his/her hand and have a coffee with us! :)
